Today, the Spanish III students worked on designing the 12 aspects of the Quinceañera focusing on religious ceremony, invitations, dress, tiara, flowers, reception hall, food, decorations, DJ, music, traditions, and escort. Students worked in groups of 3-4 and had to design all the important aspects of the Quinceañera. Their problem was the padrinos, or Godparents only gave them $3500 dollars to spend. Not much money to throw an elaborate party! I heard students say, “Can we make the budget a little bigger?? Or...How are we supposed to plan a big party with limited funds? This was the BIG problem.
While working, students had to answer 5 essential questions to get their “planning” team on the right track and the same page. Here are the questions:
1. How many people will you invite?
2. What will be the color scheme?
3. Who will be the escort?
4. How many damas and chambelanes will there be?
5. What city will your Quince be in?
Then, they divided the 12 aspects among the group and each student assumed 3-4 responsibilities. A few reasons why I LOVE this project:

- Students are simultaneously working on the “storyboard” and Google presentation together. No copying, pasting, or emailing info. All can be working on the same document together allowing for wonderful collaboration to happen!
- Students are talking to EACH OTHER, not me. Of course, a student might ask me a question (it’s usually a tech or Spanish grammar question) but most of the time they are sharing an idea or item of the Quince with their group. Today, I heard things like, “Do you like this dress. Will it go with the theme? Or..Do you think I spent too much on food? Is this food authentic Spanish food? Students were relying on each other for answers not me! These are skills for the 21st century! Teamwork, problem solving, and collaboration! To see the storyboard that the students use during the project, click below. It is a *freebie* on Teachers Pay Teachers.
After students finish the storyboard layout with hyperlinks, cost, and pictures, they are responsible for adding 30 words to their Google presentation using audioboom to explain each Quince aspect in detail in spoken Spanish. Then, next week, we will present our Quince ideas to the class and the class and students from a high school in Mexico and another Indiana high school will vote on the best one!
